CIA FAQ

Q: Do I have to be a member of The IIA to take any of the certification exams or become certified?

A: No. An individual does not have to be a member of The IIA to take the certification exams or to become certified. Membership requirements may differ in countries where the exams are administered through agreements with IIA institutes. All candidates and certified individuals must, however, agree to abide by The IIA's Code of Ethics, and practicing internal auditors with an IIA certification must comply with The IIA's International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing.

The member savings on CIA review materials will more than compensate for the price of membership. IIA membership provides access to exclusive member resources and up-to-date information on current issues; a network of thousands of members in institutes worldwide; professional standards; certification; research; and education.

Q: How do I change from a practicing CIA, CCSA, CGAP, or CFSA status to a nonpracticing status and vice versa?

A: CIA, CCSA, CGAP or CFSA who is not performing internal audit functions may request nonpracticing status by notifying the Certification Department in writing. Nonpracticing internal auditors with certifications must complete the required CPE hours to change their status to a practicing status.
What are the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) reporting requirements for CIAs, CCSAs, CGAPs, and CFSAs?

The Board of Regents requires that after certification, CIAs, CCSAs, CGAPs, and CFSAs maintain their knowledge and skills and stay abreast of improvements and current developments in their area of certification through Continuing Professional Education (CPE). This is facilitated through a self-certification process with the completion of required CPE hours on a biennial basis. Click here for details.
